Innovation
By C. Birkelo

Innovation is the act or process of inventing or introducing something new. Everyone possesses this talent, though most people do not recognize it in themselves. If you've ever marveled at another’s creativity, whether they excel in business, the sciences, or artistic and literary pursuits, realize that you also contain the ability to create and innovate. Everyone is born creative, though this inborn talent is often suppressed by circumstance. But innovation is inherent in each of us, and with a little cajoling and support, it can reemerge.

Rejuvenating your creative spirit starts with clearing the mind, removing the clutter that blocks your ability. One way to begin is with exercise. Physical activity helps immensely to relax your awareness and allow room for ideas to emerge. Take a walk, run a mile or two, practice yoga. When the body is relaxed, the mind is quiet, and creative energy rests in calmness and peace. When peace is experienced, this energy flows and can be utilized by the conscious mind. Another source for tapping innovation could be your dreams. Record them. They may just catch that inventive spark.

Once you have your idea, follow your own path. Allow for other people’s input but trust your own knowingness. When you come up with an idea, don't expend all your time and energy trying to make other people understand. Often, they won't. Instead, simply begin. Invest in your idea, whether that means putting pen to paper, testing out a new recipe, pulling out your toolbox, or firing up your computer. Flesh it out, make it real, and don’t be afraid to find your own style. You can always tell a Van Gogh from a Matisse. People will appreciate your innovation more because it is uniquely yours.

Finally, and most importantly, nothing works without passion. Trying to be creative about something you have no emotion about is like trying to start a fire with wet kindling. What wakes you up in the mornings? What keeps your flame burning? Passion keeps you going, so don't worry about your inspiration. You can't force it. Inspiration hits when you least expect it. Simply be prepared to take action when those unpredictable yet inevitable moments occur. An idea could strike you on the subway, yet you have no sheet of paper to scribble down your thought. Avoid these innovation disasters. Have a pen and paper at arm's reach always, or, for the more gadget-inclined, keep your PDA at your side. Also, always keep in mind that you're doing these things for your own satisfaction and no one else's. History proves that innovation speaks for itself, and soon enough others will notice. Cultivate your creativity, make it real, and before you know it, YOU will be the innovator.
